Waves lapping at rocks on the shore in freezing temps create interesting effects.
Past Grand Marais in Minnesota is a natural structure just off shore in Lake Superior caller Hollow Rock. I photographed this rock several years ago with the hope of catching the sunrise framed in the hollow of the rock. Sadly, that morning dawned cloudy and I did not get the shot. On this visit, I arrived later in the day, so I enjoyed photographing it in bright sunshine. I do plan to return one day for the sunrise shot.
Late November in northern Minnesota means cold air, cold water and ice. But, if one takes a moment and explores the many aspects of ice, you can find new ways of using it for photography. My abstract work is one example of ice at it’s best. This image is a reflection of the trees on the other side of the Pigeon River on the Canadian border. A bit of tweeking, a horizontal flip and it presents a new perspective.

The last of the series from the ledge rock at Gooseberry Falls State Park for November. But, I will be back out as soon as conditions are favorable for more ice pattern creations.
Each frozen pools presents a unique and original work of art by nature’s process of freezing water. Some may be similar, but no two are ever alike.

Whether in color or black and white, I love the icy abstract patterns in the pools that freeze on the ledge rock of Lake Superior.
Line, shape and texture, nature does a great job of creating art.
