I couldn’t help but notice how much this composition reminded me of the shape of Lake Superior including Isle Royale.

The Little Things
When the sunrise doesn’t rise to the occasion, it’s time to look elsewhere for inspiration. On this day, it was the frost on the rocks. I plan to work on the technique to increase the depth of focus.

A Little Time by the Lake
One of my favorite ways to start the day, sit by the shore of Lake Superior and capture a few images.
What Do You See?
One of the fun aspects of shooting ice patterns is that they are a lot like Rorschach test images. Each person that views one the images will see and interpret them differently.
Test Shot
Awhile back I invested in ND filters with the intention that I would begin to learn to use them properly. I’ve read, watched videos and studied other photographer’s work in preparation. I also added an app to my phone to help me determine the correct timing based on camera settings. After a couple of failed test shots, I managed to get one that gives me hope that with a bit more practice, I will be able to capture more shots using the filters.

Pink in the West
As the sun rises in the east, the clouds glow pink over West Duluth.
Just the Clouds
Morning light streaks through the sky illuminating the clouds with pre-sunrise colors.
Morning Stillness
All is quiet in the harbor.
Morning Activity
Sunrise viewed from Skyline Parkway above Duluth looking toward Superior, Wisconsin. The St. Louis River flows from the right on its way to Lake Superior on the left.
Glensheen Mansion Photo Meet
This past Saturday morning, the historic Glensheen mansion in Duluth was opened to photographers for a two hour opportunity to wander with cameras. Glensheen was decked out for the season with twenty five decorated trees, lots of trim and all the little knickknacks you would expect this time of year. Outdoors, the grounds were filled tacky inflatables and other statuettes. Lake Superior added a few touches to the shoreline with some ice.
