Finally, the Trip Blog!

Image

As mentioned a while back, I took a trip to Maine and Acadia National Park in July. It was a three week adventure that took me from Duluth, MN across Canada, then Maine with a return via New Hampshire, Vermont, New York, Niagara Falls and back through Michigan to Minnesota. Whew! What a trip. Not only did I see many great sights, but also had to deal with a few mishaps. Let’s get started.

The trip started the morning of July 16th. The travel trailer was loaded the night before and we were ready to roll by 9AM. Today’s tech makes trips like this easier…at least when the tech works. The trailer came with a rear view camera that not only has terrible image quality, it has a tendency to quit working at odd intervals and would have to be restarted often.

Our first stop would be the Munising Tourist Camp on the shore of Lake Superior. It’s only about five hours from home and we had time upon our arrival to set up camp before heading to our reservation for the Pictured Rocks boat tour. Note the awning, that will be part of the story in a moment.

While on the boat tour, we were not only treated to the beautiful sights of Pictured Rocks, we also had to weather a squall that surprised us.

When we left camp for the tour, we didn’t think about retracting our awning and when we arrived back at camp we discovered that the awning had been ripped from the camper by the wind. A very costly, newbie mistake. This meant that we spent the next three weeks of our trip without an awning. I’m grateful for the assistance of another camper who helped me remove the ripped canvas and tie up the awning arms for the trip.

After getting the awning stowed and a bit of breakfast, we took a quick walk on the beach and hit the road.

On to Canada and Manitoulin Island for a few nights.
