After A Cold Day

After a cold day on the road, it’s nice to find a warm place to rest. Spotting the motel sign advertising hot water heat sounded perfect! Sadly, the motel no longer exists and I had to move on.

It Was So Cold…

This past Thursday, Feb. 3, I had to take a trip to west central Minnesota. When I left Duluth, the temp was -17F. As I traveled west, the thermometer in my car started reading even colder temps, with the lowest reading at -32F. The cold, dense air created a thermal inversion which blocked warmer air from rising. This effect was best illustrated by the smoke from wood fired boilers rising about 30-40 feet above ground and stopping as though it had hit an invisible ceiling. If you were to travel further north, you could have experienced even lower temps, some lower than -40F.

Wide Open

Wide Open

Wide open spaces where the wind blows unobstructed, the roads vanish in the distance and the sky goes on forever.

North Dakota Prairie

I recently traveled around parts of North Dakota and had time to capture a few shots that I felt give a sense of the open spaces that exist in the western part of our country.  One of these days I hope to spend time slowly exploring these wide open places under the big sky.

Images were captured using my Sony RX100 V.

One Tree

This one tree, standing alone, bare, receiving the morning sun on it’s bark and branches.  It catches the eye of a passing motorist who stops his journey on the October Road and captures a moment.

October Road

I had to travel some back roads in Wisconsin the other day and, of course, I had my camera bag with me.  The further south one goes, the more fall color you’ll see.  On this particular day, there was little if any breeze and the lakes and ponds were marvelously still.  So, take a little trip down an October road with me.  Oh yeah, if you’ve seen my work before, you know things might get interesting.

Badlands #2

Four more from the Badlands…

Badlands

I recently returned from a trip to South Dakota where I visited the Badlands and the Black Hills.  Although this was not a designated photography trip, I did manage to get the camera out a few times along the way.  As I find time to sort and develop the images, I will be sharing the results with you.
