Top of the Hill

For those who travel north to Duluth, MN and beyond, and especially for those who live in the Duluth area, the view from Thompson Hill has special significance.  The view is, for residents, like a welcoming home.  For those passing through to further destinations beyond Duluth, it’s a sign that they are now in the realm of “The Lake” and the northland of Minnesota.  It’s like a gateway through which all travelers coming up Interstate 35, the main highway from the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, pass to get to their destinations, whether it is home or vacation.  For locals, it is often used as a marker.  We will tell friends to call from the top of the hill because we know how long it will take for them to arrive at our homes from there.
If you have not made the trip north, but are planning to, I highly recommend that you make a stop at the Thompson Hill Rest Area.  Take a few minutes explore the information center before heading out to the observation platform where you will see panoramic views of the St. Louis River, the harbor area, Duluth, Superior, WI. and Lake Superior.  Hopefully you will have time to explore all the area has to offer.  After all, Duluth was voted Outside magazine’s best outdoor town in June of 2014!
